New Service - Spaces Available Now! High Flyers Community Childcare @ Kirkhill Church and High Flyers @ the Woods

Due to high demand for quality early learning and childcare (ELC) in the Cambuslang area, we are pleased to announce the opening of High Flyers Community Childcare at Kirkhill Church in March 2019. This setting is managed and run by former High Flyers Nursery at Hallside Road staff and this has helped to ensure our open ended play based ethos, with a strong focus on health and wellbeing, and child-led learning is extended throughout both settings.

We believe that children are influenced by the stimulation in their physical environment - by colour, light, texture and sound. Research shows that overstimulation can have a detrimental impact on children's play and learning. This is why, within both High Flyers ELC settings, we have chosen enriched the environment with neutral colour schemes in decor and furnishings, using an abundance of natural materials  throughout.

Any enquiries for spaces at the new setting can be made by email to highflyersnursery@yahoo.com or by telephoning Isla or Laura on 0141 641 5141.

The Baby Room

The staff within the Baby Room recognise the importance of building relationships, having respect and being responsive in the care of our youngest children. Our aim is to extend the home atmosphere into the nursery and ensure that the children form positive relationships with staff.  It is also our aim is to provide opportunities and resources which will encourage young children’s natural impulse to investigate their surroundings by using their senses. All experiences are planned in line with current guidance from Education Scotland - Pre-Birth to Three: Positive Outcomes for Scotland's Children and Families.

The Baby Room offers an open plan layout and caters for children from 6 weeks to 2 years. There is secure access to the outside terrace where our youngest children can experience outdoor play in a safe environment. The children also have access to the outdoor grassed play area.

The 2 - 3 Room

The 2 - 3 Room is sitauted within a modern extension with sliding doors offering instant access on to our secure grassed play area.

The staff within the 2 - 3 Room currently plan for experiences in line with guidance from Pre-Birth to Three: Positive Outcomes for Scotland's Children and Families. This guidance produced by Education Scotland (formerly Learning and Teaching Scotland) focuses on the importance of the earliest years in a child's life, from pregnancy until 36 months. The aim of this guidance is to promote positive outcomes and root out inequalities within society.

The 3 - 5 Room

The 3 - 5 Room caters for children from 3 to 5 years. The nursery works in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council and is able to offer funding discount from the term after a child's third birthday (subject to availability).

The 3 - 5 Room operates a free flow system where children are free to choose their learning. Staff extend this learning by offering planned experiences, supplying suitable resources and being responsive to the children’s needs, taking children’s views and choices into consideration when planning topics.

The staff within the 3 - 5 Room plan for experiences to extend the children's learning in line with the Curriculum for Excellence document produced by the Scottish Government. This document emphasises the importance of Literacy and English, Numeracy and Mathematics, and Health and Wellbeing and the staff team embeds these outcomes through learning experiences and the everyday routine.

Online Learning Journals

Each child will have an individual online profile in which their key worker will document their development. The children’s individual needs are assessed through the use of observations and planning for individual learning. Children within the Baby and 2-3 Rooms will also have access to a daily diary through their learning journal which will detail information such as experiences, snack and lunches, medications given, etc.

Getting It Right for Every Child

All areas within the nursery operate a Getting It Right For Every Child (GIRFEC) approach. GIRFEC helps to ensure that children and families know where to get support if they should ever need it and that practitioners working with these children and families put them at the centre. This also places emphasis on the importance of acting at the earliest stage in order to reach positive outcomes.

Realising the Ambition

Realising the Ambition (Education Scotland, 2020) provides guidance in delivering high quality early learning and childcare (ELCC) and defines this as a concept which is not separate and should be seamlessly linked and supported by staff in ELCC. At High Flyers our staff strive to provide high quality experiences for all children in our care which are play based and not divided in to "learning time" and "playing time" - because playing is learning! Staff at High Flyers form close relationships with children and closely monitor their interests and development in order to support their next steps for learning and development.
